Andre Young cut his teeth as a DJ for the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, spinning electro-funk in matching outfits and pulling KDAY radio mix-master duty alongside DJ Yella before N.W.A even existed. That DJ ear became a production philosophy: pairing the Roland TR-808 and a Moog synth for that signature rolling bassline and wavering "portamento" lead, then hiring live musicians to replay funk grooves instead of just looping them — the warmth that made The Chronic (1992) sound like nothing else and built G-funk from scratch. He's a famous perfectionist, known for spending hours on a single hi-hat. 2001 (1999) and Compton (2015) kept the run going three decades deep. Founder of Aftermath Entertainment and co-founder of Beats Electronics — sold to Apple for $3.4 billion in 2014 — Dre remains the most influential producer the West Coast has produced.
